Juicing-coverJason Vale offers some delicious, warming juices and smoothies that will not only keep you feeling warm and cosy, but which will also help to boost the body and keep the pesky bugs at bay…

Hot ‘n’ Spicy

If you’re a little peckish after Christmas shopping, this is the perfect way to finish your day.

JUICY INGREDIENTS: (SERVES 1) 3 Golden Delicious Apples, 1 good pinch of cinnamon

JUICY INSTRUCTIONS: Juice the apples and pour juice into a saucepan. Slowly heat but DO NOT boil. When nice and hot, pour into mug, add cinnamon and get cosy! Best Served… just before bed, this delicious and warming juice is far better than any hot water bottle and is reminiscent of Christmas spices and warm apple pie!

Hot Chocolate ‘n’ Orange

Yes… a healthy twist on the classic hot chocolate! This wonderful winter warmer is super easy to make, yet please note this is one to be created in a masticating (be careful how you pronounce that!) slow juicer, such as the Retro Cold Press Juicer. If you don’t have a slow juicer then you can of course create almond milk using your blender or use organic almond milk.

JUICY INGREDIENTS: (SERVES 2) Orange (peeled) – 1 small, Cacao (or organic Cocoa) – 2 teaspoons, Almonds – 1 handful, Boiling Water – 2 x cups

PREPARE: Soak the almonds in tap water for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, then drain away the water.

METHOD: Close the stopper on the juicer. Juice the orange (retaining the juice inside the machine), turn off the juicer and add the almonds and cacao (or cocoa). Turn on the juicer and gradually pour in the boiling water until the plastic basket is full, allow to mix for a few seconds, and release the stopper.

Ginger Ninja

Ginger is a wonderful ingredient and a very key component of festive flavours and scents. This recipe is brimming with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can provide your body with the boost it needs to keep the bugs at bay as we start to feel the cold.

JUICY INGREDIENTS: 2 apples (Golden Delicious or Gala),  2 medium carrots, 1 inch wax free lemon (unpeeled), 1/2 inch raw ginger

JUICY INSTRUCTIONS: Simply juice the lot in any order you like. Pour into a glass, get cosy and enjoy! For an extra kick, feel free to add more ginger.

Top Tips to stay Healthy This Winter

“One of the best juices to have on a cold winter’s night is my  J’M-sip (pronounced ‘Jemsip’ like the popular packaged kind!). This consists of fresh apple, ginger and lemon juice mixed with hot water, sweetened with a spoonful of Manuka active honey.

“A couple of years ago I also discovered something called the ‘Ginger Shot’. All you do is juice 1 x apple with a fairly decent sized chunk of ginger (approx. 1 inch) and ‘knock it back in one’. Ginger is everyone’s favourite ‘anti’; it’s antiviral, antiseptic, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and a great natural antibiotic. It is also what you need if you ever suffer with a head cold or sinus congestion.

“For me, you just can’t beat a nice warm soup on a cold winter’s day. There are many seasonal delights to enjoy like my Pear & Parsnip Soup, Carrot & Coriander or Butternut Squash.

“Also, try snacking on raw nuts and seeds, fresh fruit, homemade hummus and carrot sticks, cucumber or slices of bell pepper.

“With everything, I believe moderation is the key and adopting a  ‘5-2-5’ mantra is a good and manageable way forward. This includes healthy eating and juicing (or just juice) throughout the week and spending a more ‘relaxed’ two days at the end of the week enjoying little treats in moderation.”
