It’s been a month since HONOR launched its new wearable product, HONOR MagicWatch 2, in the UK and we couldn’t help but put it to the test. So, here it goes.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
The MagicWatch 2 is admittedly an elegantly sporty wearable. It looks like a classic watch, with a tachymeter bezel and a body that’s not bulky. Coming in a variety of strap materials and colours and with various clock face design options, it can bring individuality to your fashion while meeting your evolving needs. However, the Always On screen of the watch does not match your watchfaces. You’ve got a choice between digital and analog for the Always On display. Not a deal-breaker, though. The smartwatch pretty much mirrors the look of Huawei’s Watch GT2 at a much more reasonable price (£159.99) with a watch case made of stainless steel. It is easy to navigate using only the watch’s interface and two side buttons and you can customise your menu shortcuts.
The display, delivering a 326 PPI pixel density, is sharp, vibrant and easy to view even in bright sunlight. The 46mm version has a 1.39-inch panel, which feels large enough to be visible in any scenario, and makes use of the extra space by adding an internal microphone as well as more battery.
In addition, if you are not quite satisfied with the band you purchased, you will be happy to know that the MagicWatch 2 accepts your standard pin straps – 22mm for the large variant and 20mm for the smaller one.

FITNESS TRACKING AND WELLNESS
Whether you’re an urban dweller or a fitness fanatic, this timepiece will keep you connected and at your optimal performance. MagicWatch 2 a battery life of 14 days. The smartwatch supports 15 goal-based fitness modes including 8 outdoor and 7 indoor sports, from outdoor modes, like running, hiking, cycling and triathlons to indoor pool swimming, free training and rowing machine, and provides full-scale monitoring, data recording and professional advice.
On top of 15 fitness modes, HONOR MagicWatch 2 is also supported by 13 professional indoor and outdoor running courses from beginner to advanced levels. Whether you are just starting out or you are already an experienced runner striving for something more professional, it is able to offer perfect courses and motivation for you to go further. The HONOR MagicWatch 2 is also packed with a virtual pacesetter with real-time actionable advice to help enhance workout efforts at your own pace.
The data is nicely displayed and well-optimised for that touchscreen display. Getting a GPS signal can initially be slow, but the issue can be solved with a software update. From an accuracy point of view, we put the MagicWatch 2 up against a Garmin running watch and found it is very reliable.
When we reviewed HONOR Band 5 fitness tracker, we discussed the device’s sleep tracking features. MagicWatch 2 has gone a step further and can act as your personal wellness advisor. Equipped with HUAWEI TruSleep™2.0 technology, the HONOR MagicWatch 2 can precisely track and diagnose 6 common types of sleep disorders and provide over 200 corresponding suggestions tailored to your sleeping habit to improve your sleep quality. From stress level monitoring to breathing exercises, this intelligent smartwatch will help you get the peace of mind you are looking for.
With water resistance up to 50 meters, MagicWatch 2 also performs well underwater to monitor your heart rate and record your SWOLF score, distance, speed and burned calories. All personal health data can be synced to your smartphone on the pre-installed HUAWEI Health App for you to keep records and monitor yourself more efficiently.
BATTERY LIFE
HONOR claims an optimistic 14-day battery on a single charge. Is it true? Well, we activated the always-on display, the 24/7 heart-rate monitoring and the automatic stress monitoring. The result? The battery dropped about 10% per day. That’s impressive! The battery is longer lasting than that of most modern smartwatches.
The HONOR MagicWatch 2 comes in two sizes – 46mm and 42mm. The 46mm Charcoal Black is available in the UK at Amazon & eBay priced £159.99 and will be coming soon to other retailers. The 42mm Agate Black variants of the watch will be available in the UK from early 2020.
THE VERDICT?
HONOR MagicWatch 2 is a multi-purpose smartwatch that fits different lifestyles; that of the professional, the fitness fanatic or the water-sports enthusiast. It is stylish, the sports tracking features are reliable and the great battery life is definitely a bonus. It’s a shame it doesn’t support third party apps but if you can live with that, go for it.
