Exercise vs Depression

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder we might start to feel those winter blues creep in… So how do we try and avoid feeling low?

One recent study puts the spotlight on exercise, suggesting that just one hour a week could be enough to prevent depression. In a study conducted by the Black Dog Institute, 33,908 Norwegian adults had their levels of exercise and symptoms of depression and anxiety monitored over 11 years. The results showed that 12 per cent of cases of depression could have been prevented if participants undertook just one hour of physical activity each week. These results come as part of Black Dog’s ‘Exercise Your Mood’ campaign, encouraging Aussies to improve their physical and mental wellbeing through exercise. If they can do it, so can the Brits – and we might need it a little more, now that winter is coming.
