Tough Mudder

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September

Holmbush Farm, Crawley Road Faygate, West Sussex, RH12 4SE

Tough Mudder, arguably the UK’s best and most well known adventure challenge series is back and it’s had an upgrade. What’s more, BESTFIT readers get 25% off. Hurrah!

Tough Mudder have been busy hosting a number of events this year but in September they’re hosting their biggest event to date. Deep in West Sussex, at new venue Holmbush Farm, they’ve been assembling the mother of all assault courses for newbies and returning ‘Legionnaire’ Mudders.

Those who have taken part before will recognize some of the challenges of old, including The Pyramid Scheme. This year, you’ll see others have had a makeover while there are also plenty of new obstacles thrown in to keep you on your toes.

The Block Ness Monster, for example, is a challenge that encapsulates Tough Mudder’s testing fun. Here, Mudders have to hoist each other over a number of rotating blocks in waist-deep water.

First-time Mudders will no doubt have heard about some of the challenges that await them. Returning competitors get exclusive access to even more upgrades of selected obstacles, including Rain Man, a twist on the
classic water obstacle Cage Crawl, and Backstabber, a more demanding and technical version of The Liberator. In addition, Legionnaires will have the option to bypass Electroshock Therapy and instead attempt a highoctane new finish obstacle, Frequent Flyers’ Club, culminating with a leap onto a crash mat from a 15-foot height.

You can enter on your own or, like most entrants, as part of a team, for Tough Mudder encourages teamwork and camaraderie. Whatever you choose, you’ll get a Merrell t-shirt at the end to add to the glory of finishing the biggest Tough Mudder yet.

So, get involved and bring your mates. Better still, bring your kids; younger participants can take part in the Fruit Shoot Mini Mudder, a onemile course designed for those aged 7-12.

To sign up, visit ToughMudder.co.uk and use the code BESTFITMAG (offer expires August 31) to get 25% off. You can also save 25% on 2016 Tough Mudder events (excluding half events).

Wolf Run

September 3-4

Next month, you can unleash your wild side and form your very own wolf pack by taking part in Wolf Run, an award-winning event.

The WOLF Run returns to Warwickshire for a weekend devoted to the phenomenon of Wild Running – a unique combination of three kinds of off-road running: mud runs, trail runs and obstacle runs. The only Wild Run in the UK, WOLF Run is a demanding 10K across raw natural terrain, including open ground, woodland, lakes and thick mud.

The course comprises ancient woodland trails and deep water crossings, high climbing nets, log walls and a legendary landslide. Whether running as a lone Wolf or as part of a Wolf pack, you’ll be tackling some of the biggest obstacles in Europe – all with a muddy smile on your face.

Every step of the course is a mental and physical test, designed to take you back to a primal, instinctive way of running in raw, challenging terrain. The course features a series of challenges using both manmade and natural obstacles – lake swims to mud pits, fallen trees to monkey bars and ditches to a 100-meter water slide. And with a WOLF Run village including live DJ’s and pop up food stalls, everyone in attendance can revel in a festival atmosphere.

Charlie Moreton, Founder of the WOLF Run, says: ‘We wanted to create unique outdoor events in incredible locations that leaves everyone who takes part with an amazing physical and mental buzz but above all, a real sense of achievement.”

So, if you fancy climbing, jumping, wading, crawling and swimming through a course designed to challenge you on every level, and earn a WOLFRUN tech t-shirt for your troubles, sign up today.

Red Bull Steeplechase

Sunday 9 October

If you’re looking to take your running events to another level you could do worse than tackle the Red Bull Steeplechase, a notoriously difficult and demanding race set in Exmoor National Park.

Described as one of the most physically and mentally demanding running events of the year, the course comprises 23 miles of challenging terrain. The distance itself is difficult, but throw in a knockout format and what you have is a treacherous event not to be taken lightly!

Red Bull Steeplechase features a unique knock-out format. Split into male and female competitions, those taking part have to reach four steeples. At each of the first three steeples the slowest section of the field is eliminated, meaning only 20 runners in each category actually reach the final steeple in Lynmouth.

You’re not racing the clock, you’re racing your competitors in a headto-head battle in an effort to avoid being eliminated.

Still reading? If you want to enter you need to be quick. The men’s race has sold out, although expect more entries to go on sale on August 5.
